Antiviruses and IoT – Protecting Against IoT Threats

As we are becoming more reliant on connected devices to run our businesses, homes and personal lives security has been pushed to the top of many peoples’ priority lists. But the type of threat that IoT devices face is quite different from the ones seen on traditional computers and require an entirely new set of tools and strategies to guard against them.

With a myriad of IoT device types with their own operating systems software and features it’s no wonder that malware attacks targeting these types of devices are increasing. The lack of standardized software also poses issues when trying to develop security tools that are compatible with several devices.

In 2016 threat actors created one of the largest botnets of all time by executing a hack on IoT devices. This caused a tsunami of the Internet and rendered websites like The New York Times’s site, Brian Krebs’s website, and French web host OVH unavailable for hours. The attackers looked through the Internet to find default usernames and passwords for IoT devices. They then gathered an army of net-software.info/how-to-delete-backup-files-in-windows-10/ these users in order to launch DDoS attacks.

IoT and antiviruses play a crucial role in protecting against these kinds of threats. However, this type of security software should expand its surveillance to include monitoring the way IoT devices communicate with each other and to the external world, and maintaining strong password security practices two-factor authentication, and up-to date patching. Together with other security solutions that are in place, these tools provide an effective defense against IoT threats.
